Travel is so much more than an escape from your daily reality. It’s a time to explore new places and meet captivating people, while also discovering yourself. When planning this life-changing experience you want to know the person working alongsid...

Beneath the warm Mexican sun, I found myself on a remarkable adventure as the sole female fisherman amidst a group of seasoned enthusiasts, all eager to conquer the waters of Cancun.

Being in the gender minority a fishing charter is a different experience. The men underestimate you- until you catch that fish. We did the traditional pool of money for those who wanted to play. Biggest fish gets the pot and if you get the pot you take a shot.

We set sail at first glass. I had arranged for lunch to be served on board. Simple sandwiches, beer, sodas, Gatorade, and of course cerveza. The men were long time friends that wanted to do something different for their annual trip. They caught up on work, lives and wives. Wives was a topic all their own and where they spent most of the conversation. The boat was just big enough to give them privacy and take in some views of my own. over the side I could see straight to the bottom of the ocean floor- being from California this is always a treat. Above me not a cloud in the sky. and in front of my a picturesque horizon of hotels and tiny tourist dotted the shore.

About 90 minutes in it was like fish were just jumping into the boat. The wheezing of one reel and the screeching of another. Then there was a fight between man and fish. You saw this thing breach, then zig and zag.  The crew yelled commands to each other while the guys cheered each other on. After about 20 minutes the creature made it on board and he looked delicious. About an hour later we made our way back to shore, there was a little restaurant there where some of the guys had opted to have another round of beers for today's success.

I asked the waiter in spanish if they would be able to cook our fish. He said yes for a fee. After some negotiating we agreed on a price. They cooked our fish and served it up to us. Our little group had an impromptu fish fry! With bellies full and bodies tan, it was time to head back to the hotel for a ciesta.

As the day came to an end, we bid farewell to the enchanting waters of Cancun, leaving with hearts full of gratitude and unforgettable experiences. The group sports fishing expedition was not merely about catching fish; it was a journey of camaraderie, adventure, and the beauty of nature.
